The National Basketball Association, in partnership with the SEED Project, organized a Jr. NBA basketball clinic and renovated two basketball courts for youngsters in the Guediawaye suburb of Senegal’s capital city, Dakar. The inauguration took place in the presence of NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, the National Basketball Association’s Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum, Mayor Amadou Baidy Seye and Joe Lopez, President of the SEED Project.

100 local children were put through their paces in a series of clinics on the courts, providing the youngsters with quality infrastructure in one of Dakar’s biggest suburbs. Upon completion of this project, the NBA will have created 91 places for youngsters to live, learn and play, in nine African countries.

According to Adam Silver, the National Basketball Association Commissioner, the NBA’s community outreach efforts in Senegal aim to use the power of sport to promote cultural understanding while teaching the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle and the values of the game such as team spirit, integrity and respect.

In 2010, the National Basketball Association opened its head offices in Johannesburg, South Africa, a move that was seen as continuing its long history which it has shared with Africa. This year alone, NBA is planning to reach at least 2.5 million boys and girls aged 16 years and below through its Jn. NBA Programs in at least 21 African countries.

Basketball is a sport that is widely followed across the world. This year’s 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup is set to take place in china and five countries will represent Africa.
