He Came and Conquered But Left Us Too Early: The Story Of World Marathon Record Holder Kelvin Kiptum

The then 23-year-old Kelvin Kiptum burst onto the marathon scene with a stunning debut victory at the Valencia Marathon in Spain clocking 2:05:21 in 2022.

The day is Sunday, October 8, 2023. The city is Chicago, United States of America. The name reverberating around the world is Kelvin Kiptum. The young Kenyan marathoner had just smashed the World Marathon record clocking 2:00:35.

Kelvin Kiptum had shed some very important 34 seconds off the record previously set and held by the all-time marathon great and fellow countryman Eliud Kipchoge in Berlin Marathon in 2022.

Just like any other sportsman who had inked his name in the books of history, the then 23-year-old budding marathoner was looking forward to a rewarding career in athletics, already training his guns on the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics among other big competition.

But as fate would have it, Kiptum didn’t know that he was not to live to his dreams.

In the night of February 11, 2024, at 11pm, Kenya and the world of athletics received some shocking news of the passing on of the 24-year-old Kelvin Kiptum and his coach and long-time friend Gervais Hakizimana from Rwanda. The two had perished in a grisly road accident in Kenya.

The deaths literally sent shockwaves through the global athletic community and far beyond the confines of the running track, touching the lives of countless individuals who admired and looked up to Kelvin Kiptum not only as an athlete but also as a symbol of hope and resilience.

Prior to breaking the world record, Kiptum had burst onto the marathon scene with a stunning debut victory at the Valencia Marathon in Spain.

His time of 2:05:21 in the Valencia Marathon in 2022 immediately turned heads, and he followed this accomplishment with back-to-back victories at the Berlin and Rotterdam Marathons, continuously pushing the boundaries of human endurance.
