ANC remains dominant in South Africa’s elections results with 80% votes counted

By Samuel Abuya

The Africa National Congress (ANC), South Africa’s governing party, has continued to lead the pack of other political parties in the country’s election results with at least 57% of the 80% counted  votes, the electoral commission has said.

The Democratic Alliance (DA), Africa National Congress’s closest challenger, comes in second with 22% of the counted votes. Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters, better known as EFF, has so far managed 10% of the votes that have been counted.

Based on the results that have been posted by the electoral commission, ANC has shed some support when compared to 2014 general election in which it registered 62% to its name. The Democratic Alliance, on the other hand, has not changed a lot while the EFF has posted a four percentage point increase from the same general election.

The Africa National Congress took a lead from the moment results started streaming in and has, so far, kept that tempo leaving other political parties to play catch up.

It is expected that Cyril Ramaphosa’s first challenge will be to reduce the size of the cabinet, something which he pushed during the campaigns saying that the cabinet needs to be trimmed.
