Of the renovations at a Mauritius power station by the African Development Bank that improved energy production, air quality

When the African Development Bank moved to facilitate the refurbishment of the old Saint Louis power station in Mauritius, its state was not only wanting but the production of energy was not at its best not forgetting the air pollution which was going on around the area where the station is located.

But that is a thing of the past now. The renovations that were done early this year, have brought with it a breath of fresh air to the environment and those working and living around the North West Mauritius power station. The refurbishments, which majorly touched on the machinery, addressed the electricity supply shortages with the aim of turning around things in the country’s largest power generating plant.

The locals in the Camp Chapelon had raised their complain on the amount of noise and gaseous emissions produced by the station, something they said was affecting not only their environment but their health as well.

However, the power plant now has optimized stack height and new engines thanks to the renovations by the African Development Bank. A noise wall was also built around the station and it is now generating power reliably with far less emissions compared to what it was before the refurbishments.

Reliable statistics indicate that at least 36 percent of the Mauritius population has benefited from the $116.7 million loan in 2015 to the state-owned Central Electricity Board (CEB).

The renovations have been credited for increasing Mauritius’ power reserve by 42 Mega Watts, consequently addressing the needs that had come up thanks to the rapidly growing population, industries, businesses, and microenterprises.

According to the AfDB, they will continue to work closely with the Mauritius government in order to help it meet its national development plan through the projects that are already underway.
