KENYAN YOUTH USING ART TO FIGHT COVID-19 IN DENSELY POPULATED SLUMS

Covid-19 news | Sam Abuya reporting from Nairobi, Kenya. The Mathare Roots Youth Group is using graffiti to help fight the coronavirus pandemic. Reporter Sam Abuya: “Covid-19 which has killed more than 200,000 people around the world and left more than 3 million others infected has caused a lot of panic around the world. This has forced several governments from around the world to strategize and re-strategize on the best and most effective way to fight this pandemic”. 

But apart from what the governments are doing, different groups have also come up to help sensitize their communities on matters Coronavirus infections.

A classic example is the Mathare Roots Youth Group which is using art to educate the masses around this infamous settlement on what they need to do to keep this deadly virus at bay.

Kepha Ong’Al founder of Mathare Roots Youth Group: “The idea a bout graffiti came about by our chairman. We got the idea from Sierra Leone. During the Ebola pandemic the people of Sierra Leone were using graffiti as a way of sensitizing their communities. It was a big intact in Sierra Leone so we borrowed the idea and brought it to Mathare”.

Hon. Patricia Mutheu: “Sierra Leone came up with a peculiar way of disseminating information to their people. So unless they see something physically then that’s when they can relate. So I heard about this group of young-men called Roots, who had come up with a very good initiative of using art to sensitize one the importance of keeping safe during this hard time that we are facing.
