Is Idrissa Gueye already essential for PSG?

By Guillaume Mahot

Being too hasty is not a good thing in football. Drawing conclusions after a few games is not wise either. It is surely too early to say that Idrissa Gana Gueye is the perfect defensive midfielder for Paris Saint-Germain, but it can be alright to say that the Senegalese player is making very good and can help this squad a lot. At this time, two points are to be underlined: his impressive performance in Champions’ League against Real Madrid (3-0) and his absence against Reims a couple of days ago for the sake of the 7th day of French league (0-2). The defeat of PSG that night was not just a coincidence.

Again, let us not be too in a hurry. How many players were praised and raised after one or two big performances to notice later that it was just smoke and mirrors? Examples are close, just take the current PSG left back Layvin Kurzawa: playing for AS Monaco, the youngster was supposed to be a top player and a credible solution in the French national team. Since he signed in Paris, he kept regressing and is now promised to the bench while Juan Bernat, the other PSG left back, is playing all the important confrontations. Kurzawa was summoned recently (March) by Didier Deschamps to play for France, people will say, but it was due to many absences at his post. He was not called again for the next games.

Gana, as put on his jersey, signed for PSG this summer coming from Everton. He signed for four years and came to strengthen the midfield, a recurrent weakness these last seasons in Paris. The Senegalese, who hit 30 this month, quickly showed his quality in Ligue 1 and on the European stage, physically and technically speaking. Against Reims, Leandro Paredes was playing and disappointed again. If Gueye keeps on like this while his rivals in the midfield fail, all factors will be gathered for him to settle definitely in this team. After barely two months of competition, that would be a delightful reward for the former Toffee.
