Champions’ league: Tottenham and Aurier in a difficult position

By Guillaume Mahot

Last night was to forget for the last finalist of the Champions’ League. Tottenham of Ivorian defender Serge Aurier, captain of the Elephants, was defeated at home (0-1) by the Germans of RB Leipzig for the sake of the first leg game of the round of 16 of the tournament. Timo Werner scored the only goal of the game on penalty (58’) and puts his squad in the best position (one goal scored, none against) before the second leg game in Leipzig in three weeks.

Without Son and Kane, their best players offensively speaking, José Mourinho’s players did not find the solution against a team that is quite new and unexperimented at this level of competition. For Serge Aurier and the rest of the team, things are simple now: a victory is the only thing to hope for to avoid any early elimination for a team that reached the last step of the most prestigious European competition last year and this defeat against the Reds of Liverpool (0-2). No doubt that the Germans of former Parisian midfielder Christopher Nkunku will do everything to get those quarter finals in front of their fans, no matter who stands before them. Even if it is the vice-champion.

In the other eighth final of last night, the Italians of Atalanta crushed the Spanish team of Valencia by 4 goals to 1. Quite unexperimented at this level as well, Atalanta did not get frightened by the stakes and scored by Hans Hateboer (16’ 62’), Josip Ilicic (42’) and Remo Freuler (57’). The Spanish team of midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia (Central African Republic) scored by Russian player Denis Cheryshev (66’), who scored many beautiful goals in the last world cup in Russia by the way. Valencia needs a 3-0 to pass.
