Kevin Anderson about to challenge Lloyd Harris next year

By Guillaume Mahot

This is merely the best African game you can ever dream of. South African tennis player Kevin Anderson, currently best player of the continent, decided to defy his young compatriot Lloyd Harris in upcoming February 2020. This will be for the sake of the BNP Paribas Rising Stars Tournament at the Arthur Ashe Stadium of Soweto, South Africa.

Anderson claimed he longed to help South African tennis to develop and thrive, and this exhibition can be considered as an opportunity to make it grow through a confrontation between South Africa’s number one and number two. Lloyd Harris, 22 years old, is seen as the next top South African player. Currently ranking 105th at the ATP singles ranking (his best ranking was a 82nd position in July 2019), the youngster won the Launceston Tennis International in February and managed to take a set to Roger Federer at the last Wimbledon (July) even though he finally (and logically) lost the game in the end (opening round). A challenge against Anderson is obviously an interesting step in his career, perhaps more symbolic than really enriching, but defying the best ones can always make you learn something.

On Kevin Anderson’s side, things are a little more complicated at the time and this game should help him come back in the business. As a matter of fact, the 33-year-old tennis player recently decided to put an end to his 2019 season due to repeated injuries and we will not see him on the courts until next year. Anderson, who was finalist at the US Open 2017 and Wimbledon 2018, is now ranking 18th at the ATP Rankings. Compelled to withdraw from US Open lately, he played fifteen games and five tournaments in 2019 and hopes to start 2020 with fewer injuries. Harris, waiting for the game, hopes it as well.
