Aya is Abouet’s first published work. It is also her first venture into graphic novels, as well as a collaborative effort with her husband who used Aya as his first illustrating job in graphic novels.
She was influenced to do a graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi, the author of Persepolis. It also emerged from her desire to show an Africa with a focus on issues other than war and famine, which is typically what the media focus on in portraying Africa.
Her characters go to school, trudge off to work, plan for the future and allow themselves to be ensnared in domestic entanglements on the Ivory Coast the same way they do everywhere else.
The “Aya de Yopougon” series delves deeper into the dynamics of life in Abidjan, offering a blend of humor, drama, and social commentary. Through Aya’s life and those of her friends and family, the series presents a slice-of-life narrative about growing up in a developing African country during the late 20th century.
Themes Explored in Aya de Yopougon:
- Ambition vs. Tradition:
Aya dreams of becoming a doctor, which contrasts with societal expectations for women in her community. Many of her peers are more focused on getting married or finding boyfriends, showing a tension between personal aspirations and traditional roles for women. - Female Friendships:

This social commentary is woven into the fabric of the story, highlighting the socioeconomic challenges faced by many African communities.
Aya as a Role Model:
Aya’s character stands out as a strong and positive role model. Unlike her friends, she is not interested in chasing men or finding quick fixes to problems. Instead, she focuses on her education and dreams of becoming a doctor. Aya represents young African women who strive to break free from societal expectations and chart their own path, showing the importance of education, independence, and self-determination.
