A nine-year-old Congolese girl succumbs to Ebola in Uganda

A nine-year-old Congolese girl has died in Uganda in what health officials have confirmed to be an Ebola case.

According to the officials, the young girl had been diagnosed of Ebola at the Mpondwe border crossing point while on their way into Uganda from her home country – the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The diagnosis report indicate that she had fever and was immediately isolated at an Ebola unit at Kasese town.

Plans are underway to have the body of the girl’s body back home for burial. The Ugandan administration is working hand in hand with their counterparts in DRC to actualize that.

According to reliable sources, the girl’s family had earlier on requested to be repatriated for treatment. The mother of the young girl will be isolated and returned home, according to Ugandan officials.

The World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that 300 vaccines doses have been sent to Bwera Hospital which is along the Congolese border. In June alone, two Ebola deaths were reported in Uganda.

Museveni’s administration has maintained Ebola screening centres along its borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo in a bid to curb the deadly diseases from spreading. Ebola has killed an estimated 2,000 people since the outbreak was reported in August.

The World Health Organization had declared the Ebola outbreak in eastern DR Congo a public health emergency of international concern.

The declaration came amid reports of new cases, raising fears that the outbreak, which has been mostly confined to North Kivu province, could spread into neighboring nations.

However, two experimental treatments raised hopes among medical personnel that a cure for the deadly virus Ebola would be on its final stages after it registered a 90% cure rate.
