Africa has a rich cultural heritage and the internet and social media platforms have made it easier to discover new work from across the continent – from the comfort of your own home. So, if you are looking for a good read or just curious about African writing and literary culture, we have rounded up 5 websites for you to check out:

  1. AFREADA

AFREADA describes itself as “an online literary magazine, featuring original short stories from emerging writers across the Continent.” In addition to short stories, they also publish photos and book reviews. You can visit their website at https://afreada.com/about/

2. BRITTLE PAPER

Brittle Paper is another online literary magazine that is the “ go-to site for African writing and literary culture”. They publish a range of items such as short stories, poems and feature articles that delve deep into the literature landscape on the continent. You can follow them on Twitter and Instagram @brittlepaper. 

3. OMENANA 

Omenana is a literary magazine that specializes in speculative fiction( think supernatural and ‘out of this world’) magazine – that written by merging writers from across Africa and the diaspora. Readers are welcome to submit “well-written speculative fiction that bridges the gap between past, present and future through imagination and shakes us out of the corner we have pushed ourselves into”.

4. Kalahari Review 

Kalahari Review is a website “ where Africa tells her stories”. It is home to writing – ranging from non-fiction essays, short stories and poetry – produced by African writers. 

5. Saraba Magazine
