African women continue to soar high in various fields ranging from sports to entertainment. This article covers 3 black women who’ve made it to our list of powerful African women in the entertainment industry. The women have won various awards in different sectors and are doing well in the entertainment industry.

The 3 powerful women in entertainment have impressive followings on social media, with an ever-growing base of fans in their individual countries, Africa and the entire world. With their hard work, these women have managed to inspire many lives and become popular in Africa and across the whole world. 

They’ve made a name for themselves and the African continent as a whole. Here’re 3 of the most powerful African women in the entertainment industry to look out for. The list is in no specific order.

  1. Kenya’s Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita is an actress and film-maker in Hollywood. Her role in “12 Years a Slave” officially launched her career into Hollywood mainstream. The Kenyan-born actress now makes appearances on the cover of top magazines, including Glamor and The Hollywood Reporter. 

She’s seen alongside other successful black women such as Octavia Spencer, Oprah, Julia Roberts, etc. Rocking the best red carpet looks, Lupita is also doing well in the fashion industry. Many designers are happy to dress her with their latest clothes and outfits on the catwalk. 

Her “role in 12 Years as a slave” won her various awards such as the LA Film Critics Association & New York Film Critics Award and The Holly Wood Film Awards for the “Best Supporting Actress awards”

Lupita studied and graduated from the Yale School of Drama. The actress and film-maker hit the headlines with the release of her debut film. With Oscar nomination buzzes under her feet, the powerful African woman is bound to succeed in her Hollywood career. She’s also enjoying media mentions on platforms such as InStyle, New York Post, etc.

Having appeared on the Dujour cover, an American Magazine, only the sky is the limit for this beautiful Kenyan who’s also appeared on the list of the most beautiful African women worldwide.

  1. Ghana’s Jackie Appiah

Jackie is an actress and one of the highest paid Ghanaian actresses. Her acting prowess has earned her several awards such as the best AMCVA actress in 2013, the best AMMA actress, the best NAFCA actress in Washington, DC, etc.

The ebony actress has also been spotted on various commercials and billboards across the African continent for ICT IPMC brand, UB hair care and Globacom, a telecommunications giants, among other top brands.

Despite not being on social sites such as Twitter and Facebook, her fan base traverses the African continent, including certain parts of America and Europe. She was once Ghana’s spokesperson for a campaign on HIV/AIDs awareness.

Although Jackie prefers a private, quiet life, she’s powerful, respected and obviously makes some good cash from her acting career.

  1. South Africa’s Toya Delazy

Toya is a song-writer and singer, atop being one of the most successful female artistes in South Africa. She rose to fame during the Africa Day concert in 2011 when she released her first solo. The convert was held in Johannesburg, South Africa. 

She went ahead to release the album “Due Drop” in 2012 after being signed to Sony Music Africa. “Pump it Up,” her single debut album that followed, became a hit across the African continent.

Under the Best African Act category, she was the only female who was nominated for BET awards in 2013. She has a huge social media following and has made a number of appearances on TV as a guest. She performs at high profile concerts and gigs, and most of her music get good airplay.

Among the various awards she’s won include the South Africa Music Awards dubbed “SAMA.” Toya has also received various Channel O awards. The powerful woman is hardworking and an inspiration to many upcoming talent in the South African music industry and Africa as a whole.

Other women in the list of top powerful African women in the entertainment industry include Nigeria’s Tiwa Savage (a song-writer, singer and recording artiste), Waje (a singer), and Uche Jombo aka Rodriquez (a screenwriter, actress and producer).

Namibia’s Maria Nepembe (a model, OAP and presenter), Zimbabwe’s Pokello (a fashionista), Angola’s Weza Da-Silva (a presenter, model and actress), and Nigeria’s Beverly Osu (a reality show star and model), are other powerful women from across the African continent.
