Rema, the 18-year-old Nigerian rapping wonderkid and Mavin Records’ new signing drops a colorful video for hit-track ‘Dumebi’

By Samuel Abuya

Rema, a young and fast-rising Nigerian artist recently signed by Mavin Records has finally dropped the much anticipated video for his smash track ‘Dumebi’, a song that has been described by many music legends in the country as a standout in his self-titled EP.

In the video, Rema is seen trying to crush or make a move on an already taken beautiful girl trying to catch her attention at all cost while on a road trip. The boyfriend of the girl that Rema crushes is, however, present on the road trip as well, making it hard for him to make any move.

Directed by the seasoned Ademola Falomo, the ‘Dumebi’ video has come as, yet another, testament of how the Nigerian youth are slowly but surely curving their own space in the music industry and how creative they are. The video has been credited for its high quality sounds and visuals.

How I discovered Rema – Don Jazzy

While talking to the last episode of ‘Loose Talk’ dubbed ‘The Blueprint’ on the signing of Rema and other things, Don Jazzy revealed how Mavin Records discovered the wonderkid who has already made a name for himself in the Nigeria’s music industry.

Don Jazzy revealed that Rema was discovered through Instagram.

“D’Prince dropped a song, ‘Gucci Gang,’ featuring myself and David and the young man did a freestyle to it and tagged us. That’s how everybody finds every artist; tag somebody, if the person is feeling you, you blow up,” he told the Loose Talk podcast.

Rema compared to Wizkid

Ever since Rema was signed by the Jazzy’s label social media in Nigeria has been abuzz with many people comparing him to the music superstar Wizkid, some saying he is better than Wizkid. Some, however, feel it is ‘disrespectful’ to compare Rema to Wizkid.

Some quarters have described the video of Rema hit song as “a classic tale of unrequited love”.
