Don Jazzy, a renowned Nigerian producer, opens up on Tiwa Savage’s exit from his Mavin Records

By Samuel Abuya

Don Jazzy, a Nigerian music legend and producer, has finally come forth to clear the air on Tiwa Savage’s exit from Mavin Records, a record label that he owns, to join the American-based music company, the Universal Music Group, saying: she is still a business partner, and that they are still working together.

While talking to the last episode of ‘Loose Talk’ dubbed ‘The Blueprint’ hosted by AOT2, BadGirlMo, Jess and Steve, Don Jazzy poured praises to Tiwa saying she is the kind of artist who knew what she wanted from day one and that she is not only understanding but also matured. Don Jazzy acknowledged Tiwa’s role in helping grow his brand.

Mavin Records

In the podcast, Don Jazzy says: “It’s obvious to everybody, it was an epic journey and I don’t necessarily even feel like now because you’ve signed to universal, to everybody it just looks like she’s gone to the land beyond.

“I don’t understand, we’re still business partners, there’s still catalogues that we share that she’s still going to be receiving royalties from for the rest of her life or whatever.

“I and D’banj worked together for eight years and Tiwa would have been eight years too as well but it was beautiful and she understood from the get-go till now”.

Tiwa, who earned the name ‘Mavin first lady’, left Mavin Records to sign what has been described in the entertainment circles as a ‘lucrative deal’ with Universal Music Group – one of the world’s leading music companies with operations in more than 60 countries around the world.

There’s nothing she doesn’t understand, we try as much as possible to understand each other. Sometimes, even when we should disagree with each other on some things, she’s just matured, you know,” he added.

Rema – the new kid on the block at Mavin Records

Don Jazzy also revealed that their new kid on the block, Rema, was discovered through Instagram.

“D’Prince dropped a song, ‘Gucci Gang,’ featuring myself and David and the young man did a freestyle to it and tagged us. That’s how everybody finds every artist; tag somebody, if the person is feeling you, you blow up,” he told the hosts.

Apart from the issue of Tiwa leaving Mavin Records, Don Jazzy also hinted on the possibilities of a Mo’ Hits Reunion concert.

The interview aired on the very same day that the exit of Tiwa Savage was announced as well as a few days after Simi exited from X3M music.
