KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of the Congo, June 3, 2025 – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has officially welcomed Congolese rapper and influencer Sista Becky (Rebecca Kalonji) as its newest High-Level Supporter, strengthening its efforts to combat hunger and malnutrition across the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Sista Becky joins fellow national icons Innoss’B and Distel Zola as part of a growing team of influential advocates working alongside WFP to promote school feeding, support access to nutritious food, and fight acute malnutrition in one of the world’s most food-insecure countries.
With more than 28 million people facing severe hunger and 4.75 million children suffering from acute malnutrition, the stakes in the DRC could not be higher. WFP’s partnership with Sista Becky brings a bold new voice to its campaign—one that resonates powerfully with the country’s youth and marginalized communities.
“Through my voice and my work, I want to challenge young people to not only raise their voices but also to take action on the issues that directly impact their future—including access to nutritious food and better opportunities for women and girls,” said Sista Becky.
A rising star in the African music scene, Sista Becky is celebrated not just for her lyrical talent, but also for her commitment to social issues. Her breakout single “Mr Rap” in 2016 marked her entry into the spotlight, while her 2021 album “Apéritif” cemented her place in Congolese music. Her latest single, “Kimpa Vita”, is a tribute to one of Congo’s historical heroines and further demonstrates her passion for driving positive change through art.
“We are thrilled to have Sista Becky join our mission to fight hunger and improve nutrition in the DRC,” said Elvira Pruscini, WFP’s Representative and Country Director a.i. in DRC. “Her influence, creativity, and dedication to social justice align perfectly with WFP’s goals, and we’re confident that her support will energize communities and inspire action.”
Sista Becky’s engagement comes at a critical juncture. The WFP is currently grappling with a significant funding shortfall—requiring US$433 million over the next six months to sustain life-saving operations and meet escalating humanitarian needs in the country.
By joining the WFP family, Sista Becky is lending her voice to one of the most urgent issues facing the DRC today—ensuring every child and every family has access to the food and nutrition they need to survive, thrive, and build a better future.
