Rooibos, South Africa’s Caffeine-free Herbal Tea, Exports Hit Record 10,930 Tons as Global Demand Surges

Rooibos, South Africa’s popular caffeine-free herbal tea, has registered a new milestone in its business, as exports of its products surged past 10,000 tons for the first time, reaching approximately 10,930 tons and setting a record for the industry.

The export milestone signals more than volume growth, reflecting how global consumers are increasingly shifting toward natural wellness beverages, particularly those free from caffeine and synthetic additives. As demand rises, Rooibos is steadily moving from a regional speciality to a globally recognised herbal brand.

According to recent data, Japan remains the largest international market for the South African Rooibos, a position it has held for years due to strong consumer interest in functional beverages. European markets continue to show steady demand, while emerging Asian economies are also contributing to the new growth momentum of the South African product that is on its way to becoming a household name in the country. Together, these regions have strengthened the industry’s export performance in a year marked by heightened health awareness worldwide.

Grown almost exclusively in the rugged Cederberg region of South Africa’s Western Cape, Rooibos benefits from a unique climate and soil profile that cannot easily be replicated elsewhere. The plant’s geographic specificity has become one of its strongest selling points, reinforcing its identity as a distinctly South African product with protected origin status in key markets.

Rooibos is banking on its unique composition as its global appeal. The tea is known for being naturally caffeine-free and low in tannins, offering a smoother alternative to traditional black or green teas. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties have been widely promoted in wellness circles, while many consumers value its mild, calming effect without the stimulation associated with caffeinated drinks.

The record export figures also highlight the broader evolution of South Africa’s agricultural exports. As traditional commodities face price pressures and climate challenges, value-added products such as Rooibos are helping diversify revenue streams and strengthen rural economies tied to specialised cultivation zones.

For producers in the Cederberg, the 2025 milestone represents both achievement and responsibility. Sustaining growth will require careful management of supply chains, quality standards and environmental conditions that make Rooibos cultivation possible in the first place.

As global beverage preferences continue to tilt toward natural and plant-based options, Rooibos appears well-positioned to deepen its international footprint. The crossing of the 10,000-ton mark is not simply a statistical benchmark. It confirms that a once local brew has secured a firm place in the global wellness market.
