Njie in Russia

By Guillaume Mahot

Clinton Njie leaves the French league. The Cameroonian forward took this summer transfer period as an opportunity to go and discover a new championship after France (Olympique Lyonnais, Olympique de Marseille) and England (Tottenham Hotspur). In 94 games played with Marseille, Njie scored 18 goals and gave 9 assists.

Njie agreed on a four-year deal with FC Dynamo Moscow. He will thus take part in this Russian adventure with Burkinabe midfielder Charles Kaboré (who played in Marseille too, from 2007 to 2013), but also Malian Samba Sow and Ghanaian Abdul Aziz Tetteh. Marseille sold him for 5,5 million euros (when they had bought him 7 million euros to Tottenham two years ago).

The Cameroonian, carrying loads of hope at his beginnings in Lyon in 2012, never really confirmed them all across his career. Barely playing in England (18 games with the Spurs), he was mostly confined to the bench of substitutes in southern France. This Russian exile can sound like a gold rush for the 25-year-old player and (perhaps) the end of his European ambitions, the Russian league being less mediatized and far less competitive than Western championships (Spain, England, Italy or Germany…). But on the other hand, Njie may have much more opportunities to play in Moscow, which was not the case both in Tottenham and Marseille.

With the Lions, Clinton Njie just left the last African Cup of Nations with a lot of disappointment, Cameroon being kicked out of the tournament in 1/8th finals against Nigeria (2-3), a game where Njie had scored by the way. That early elimination rang the knell of Dutch duo Clarence Seedorf and Patrick Kluivert at the head of the selection. Both were laid off this month to try to shake and wake up a selection who won the competition not so long ago (2017).
