Talent, pomp and colour as the much awaited East Africa Got Talent premieres

The inaugural East Africa Got Talent show aired yesterday Sunday, August 4, 2019, with various acts taking to the stage to showcase what they have.

The show, an East Africa’s version of the “Got Talent” reality show which is replicated in various parts of the world, saw two first acts from Rwanda get ‘Yes’ to proceed to the next level. The show aired simultaneously across East Africa – Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.

The first Rwandan to grace the stage, the 32-year-old Fidele Fle moved all the judges with his love song and his guitar skills, something which saw him get a yes from the four judges – Kenya’s Jeff Koinange, Ugandan and former Big Brother Africa 2003 contestant Gaetano Kagwa, Vanessa Mdee from Tanzania and Makeda Mahadeo of Rwanda.

‘All Eyes Crew’ from Uganda were the first act to make an appearance in the East Africa Got Talent show and were given a green light to proceed to the next stage. They were followed by ‘Wandidi’ from Kenya who also wowed the judges with his ‘talking one-stringed instrument’.

The 7-year-old Leyna Kagere from Uganda was the first act to get a golden buzzer after putting up a talented performance leaving all the judges amazed and finally judge Vanessa Mdee convinced them (judges) to hit the buzzer.

The show, which is expected to climax in October, debuted this Sunday and will be airing every other Sunday on Citizen TV in Kenya, RTV in Rwanda, Clouds Media in Tanzania and in NBS TV in Uganda.

However, the premiere East Africa Got Talent show attracted mixed reactions from fans, especially in the online world with many of them expressing their dissatisfactions on the fact that the show is not live, as they had expected. The episode which aired seemed to have been recorded at different times because the judges had different clothes.

The winner of the Safaricom and Coca Cola powered show will go home with $50,000.
