FEMUA 18 Gets Underway in Côte d’Ivoire With an Expanded Scope in Music, AI Talks and Comedy

Abidjan has once again become a continental cultural stage as FEMUA 18 unfolds, drawing artists, policymakers, and audiences into a festival that continues to stretch beyond music into broader conversations shaping Africa’s future.

The Festival des Musiques Urbaines d’Anoumabo (FEMUA), founded in 2008 by A’Salfo of Magic System, has grown into one of Africa’s largest music gatherings, attracting tens of thousands of spectators while maintaining free access to many of its flagship concerts. This year’s edition, running from April 28 to May 3 across Abidjan and Dimbokro, builds on that legacy while pushing the festival into new territory.

At the centre of FEMUA 18 is a theme that reflects a changing continent: “Artificial Intelligence: Threat or Opportunity for Africa?”

The festival is deliberately using its platform to connect culture with technology, opening space for dialogue on how AI will reshape creative industries, employment, and African storytelling. That shift signals a broader evolution in the festival’s identity, where music now sits alongside policy and innovation conversations.

Alongside headline performances at the INJS in Marcory and outreach events in Dimbokro, FEMUA 18 continues to run its civic and social components, including youth-focused engagements and development initiatives that have, over the years, contributed to the construction of schools and social infrastructure. The model positions the festival not just as entertainment, but as a tool for community impact and regional integration.

One of the clearest signs of that evolution this year is the introduction of the FEMUA Comedy Show, a new segment that has quickly established itself as one of the standout innovations of the 2026 edition. Promoted as a key addition to the programme, the show brought together some of the region’s leading comedians, delivering performances that combined humour with sharp social critique.

The response has been immediate. Audiences filled the venue and remained fully engaged as comedians unpacked everyday African realities through satire, touching on politics, social behaviour, and economic pressures. The format introduced a different kind of energy into the festival, one that relies less on musical spectacle and more on shared experience and reflection.

For organisers, the success of the FEMUA 18 Comedy Show goes beyond entertainment. It marks a deliberate effort to diversify the festival’s creative expressions and respond to the growing influence of stand-up comedy as a cultural force across Africa. By integrating humour into its structure, FEMUA is expanding how it engages audiences while reinforcing its role as a platform for commentary as much as performance.

The presence of Gabon as the guest of honour adds another layer to the festival’s continental outlook, strengthening cultural diplomacy and exchange. FEMUA has consistently positioned itself as a meeting point for African cultures, and this year’s programming continues that tradition by bringing together artists and delegations from across the continent.

What emerges from FEMUA 18 is a festival that is no longer defined solely by music. It has evolved into a multi-dimensional cultural institution, where performance, dialogue, and innovation intersect. The addition of new segments like comedy, alongside themes such as artificial intelligence, reflects a conscious effort to keep pace with the realities shaping Africa today.

As the festival continues through the week, the crowds will follow the music. But the deeper impact will come from how FEMUA 18 continues to expand its scope, using culture as a platform to engage with the ideas, challenges, and opportunities defining the continent’s future.
