Amazing UNESCO World heritage sites in Africa

Fifth day of May is Africa World Heritage Day, and it presents the opportunity for Africans to celebrate their unique culture and natural heritage with the whole world.  Even though that is something, many people in the continent have forgotten about, Africa has some of the Amazing UNESCO heritage sites.

Robben Island in South Africa is an amazing historical site and it has a long history.  In the 17th and 18th century, the Island was a hospital for people with leprosy as well as mental illness.  During the Second World War, it acted as a military base. Nonetheless, the latter could not be the reasons why most people know the Robben Island.  Its use as a political prison during the fight and struggle for South African Independence makes it to have a significant place in the South Africa history. The late Nelson Mandela served his 18 years in the Robben Island after being imprisoned for 27 years.

The Serengeti National Park Tanzania is another famous historical site in Africa.  It is known to have the largest population of lions and big cats. Included in the park are also gazelles, Zebra, Rhinos, as well as other animals that call this place home.  Understandably, many people come here to witness the famous wildebeest migration.  Their journey starts in the month of December in the Ngoro Ngoro area.

Another amazing world heritage site is the Rock Hewn Churches of Lalibera, Ethiopia.  The church is home to 11 monolithic rock-cut churches carved from red volcanic rock.  King Lalibela who was in a mission to create a New Jerusalem in Ethiopia during the 12th century engineered the church construction style.

We cannot mention amazing historical sites in Africa and fail to include the Victoria Falls. This is a breathtakingly scenic fall off the Zambezi River.  Going by the fact that Dr. David Livingstone was the first to see the Victoria Falls in his research trip to Africa, and naming after Queen Victoria, a trip to this fall will be worth your while.

These African heritage sites speak volumes about the African continent.
