Senegal is set to make Olympic history when Dakar hosts the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, becoming the first country in Africa to stage an Olympic event. The Games will run from October 31 to November 13, with about 2,700 athletes aged 15 to 18 expected to compete across twenty-five competitive sports.
A further ten sports will form part of a mobilisation programme designed to encourage young people in Senegal and the region to participate in sport. The historic milestone moved closer this month when the Olympic flame was lit at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens on September 10.
The flame arrived in Dakar two days later and is now beginning a 3,600-kilometre journey through all 14 regions of Senegal, carried by more than 400 torchbearers before returning to the capital for the Games. For Senegal, the event is about more than bringing an international competition to Dakar.
The Games will be spread across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly, allowing the country to use the event to showcase its sporting infrastructure, culture and growing capacity to host major international competitions. The IOC says preparations have entered the final delivery phase following years of coordination between the organising committee, government and Olympic authorities.
Dakar 2026 also carries significance for the wider African sporting landscape. The continent has hosted major global competitions, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, but has never hosted an Olympic event. The Youth Olympic Games, which began in Singapore in 2010, will therefore mark the first time the Olympic movement stages an event on African soil. The decision to award the Games to Senegal followed an Olympic bidding process in which Dakar was selected in 2018 to host the 2022 Youth Olympics.
The event was subsequently postponed by four years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, making Dakar 2026 the fourth Summer Youth Olympic Games after Singapore, Nanjing and Buenos Aires. The Games are also being framed around Senegal’s young population and the broader question of how sport can create opportunities beyond competition. Dakar 2026 has developed programmes aimed at training young Senegalese professionals for roles connected to the Games.
The IOC has described the event as an opportunity to create a lasting impact for young people in Senegal and across Africa. The symbolism is heightened by the IOC’s current leadership. Kirsty Coventry, a former Zimbabwean Olympic swimmer who became the organisation’s first African and first female president in 2025, attended the flame-lighting ceremony in Athens and described Dakar 2026 as a new chapter for the Olympic movement.
As the flame travels across Senegal, the country is effectively taking the Olympic movement beyond Dakar and into communities across the country. By the time the Games open in October, the significance of Dakar 2026 Olympics will extend beyond the medals. Senegal will have established a new precedent for Africa as the continent finally takes its place as an Olympic host.
