A Nigerian-American engineer has developed HaloBraid, which is being described as the world’s first braid-assist robot, attracting $7 million in investor funding as demand grows for technology that could transform one of Africa’s most culturally significant and labour-intensive industries.
Yinka Ogunbiyi, a Harvard graduate and founder of HaloBraid, created the robotic system to assist professional hairstylists with braiding, helping reduce the physical strain of repetitive work while significantly shortening the time needed to complete doing different hairstyles.
The innovation has generated strong interest ahead of its commercial launch, with more than 7,000 salons already joining the waitlist, underscoring growing confidence that robotics can complement rather than replace skilled beauty professionals. Unlike fully automated machines designed to perform an entire service independently, HaloBraid functions as an assistive tool. Stylists remain in control of the hairstyle, while the robot helps with repetitive braiding motions, allowing professionals to work more efficiently, serve more clients and reduce fatigue during long working hours.
