Moussa Wagué, from Barça to Nissa

By Guillaume Mahot

Senegalese right back Moussa Wagué is going to experiment a new championship and a new football after Senegal, Belgium and Spain. And he should have more opportunities to play as well!

The twenty-one-year-old player was lent by FC Barcelona to the French club of OGC Nice until the end of the season (June). Nice will then have the possibility to buy him at ten million euros thanks to an option to buy that was negotiated between both clubs.

For the Blaugrana, this deal can be a chance to get more experience to a player that impressed them in the last FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia with the Lions. Barcelona had bought him after the Russian tournament, but Moussa Wagué mostly played in second division (Segunda Division B) in 2018/2019. If Barcelona decides to get him back after his French exile, it will still be some good news for a player full of promises but who needs more minutes to show his potential. With barely six games played with Barça’s professional team (three this season, one in the Spanish League and the remaining ones in Champions’ League), the youngster was willing to find some time elsewhere to remain competitive, which was done by signing for Nice, where the competition will obviously be less fierce than in Catalonia.

Moussa Wagué, who was finalist of the last African Cup of Nations with Senegal in 2019 (final lost 0-1 against Algeria), must also think of the next perspectives with the national team. Being part of a big team in club does not make everything and if you do not play, your place in the selection is not warranted, even though your club is Barcelona. Aware of that, Wagué made the right choice, not only for him and his desire to play more, but also for his nation. Time to prove now.
