Ethiopian Airlines is the most profitable and largest airline in Africa as of 2026.

Africa’s largest airline, Ethiopian Airlines Group, is in the final stages of deciding on a major order for up to 50 new aircraft, reinforcing its ambitious expansion strategy as demand for air travel continues to grow across Africa and beyond.

The order is expected to include a mix of narrow-body passenger aircraft and freighters. The airline is evaluating the Airbus A220, Embraer’s E2 family and the Boeing 737 MAX 7 for its next generation of regional operations. Ethiopian Airlines is also considering acquiring up to 16 cargo aircraft, comprising eight firm orders and eight purchase rights, to strengthen its rapidly growing freight business.

Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Commercial Officer Lemma Yadecha said the airline is in the final phase of the evaluation process, with a decision expected in the coming months as it seeks aircraft capable of serving shorter domestic and regional routes more efficiently. The planned acquisition forms part of Ethiopian Airlines’ long-term Vision 2035 strategy, which aims to more than double its fleet to 271 aircraft while significantly expanding passenger and cargo operations.

The airline already operates one of Africa’s youngest and most diverse fleets, including Airbus A350s, Boeing 737s, 777s and 787 Dreamliners, alongside De Havilland Dash 8 turboprops used on regional routes. Unlike the larger Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, which primarily serve medium-haul destinations, the smaller aircraft under consideration would enable Ethiopian Airlines to increase frequencies on lower-demand routes, improve connectivity between secondary cities and replace ageing regional aircraft with more fuel-efficient models. The expansion also reflects broader changes in Africa’s aviation market.

As passenger traffic grows and regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area gains momentum, airlines are increasingly investing in aircraft capable of connecting underserved markets where demand is expanding but does not yet justify the use of larger planes. Cargo remains another key priority. Ethiopian Airlines operates Africa’s largest dedicated air cargo network and has become a major logistics partner for pharmaceuticals, perishable goods, e-commerce and humanitarian relief.

Additional freighters would further strengthen Addis Ababa’s position as one of Africa’s leading cargo hubs, linking the continent with Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas. The latest procurement plans follow Ethiopian Airlines’ major Boeing order at the 2023 Dubai Airshow, where it committed to purchasing 11 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 20 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, with options for dozens more. The airline has also expanded its Airbus fleet in recent years, becoming Africa’s first operator of the Airbus A350 and adding further A350 aircraft to support its long-haul growth.

The competition among Airbus, Boeing and Embraer underscores Ethiopian Airlines’ growing influence in the global aviation industry. Few airlines on the continent possess the financial strength, operational scale and growth trajectory required to place fleet orders of this magnitude.

As African economies become increasingly interconnected, airlines are under growing pressure to build networks that link not only major capitals but also emerging commercial centres. Ethiopian Airlines’ next fleet decision is therefore about more than adding aircraft. It is an investment in the connectivity required to support a continent whose business, tourism, and trade ambitions increasingly depend on faster, more reliable air transport.
