Champions League: Onana and Ajax unstoppable

Which team will stop Ajax Amsterdam? The Dutch squad of Cameroonian goalkeeper André Onana succeeded in kicking out Juventus Turin of the Champions League after winning in Italy 2-1 (1-1 in the first leg game) last night for the sake of the quarter finals of the competition. After having eliminated Real Madrid (winner in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018) in round of 16, this is another authentic exploit which has been achieved by the players of coach Erik ten Hag.

And yet, things were not going in the right way before the game. As a matter of fact, with the draw 1-1 acquired at home last week, the Dutch youngsters (24 years old of average for the starting team) had to score at least once to get a chance against experimented defenders such as Leonardo Bonucci. The situation was quite the same against Real since Ajax had to make up a defeat 1-2, what they did with the incredible 4-1 in Santiago Bernabeu.

Led by Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek and Moroccan winger Hakim Ziyech, Ajax had to suffer Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal in the 28’ that was, at this moment, qualifying the Bianconeri. Barely six minutes later, van de Beek was putting both teams on equal standards (1-1) for the biggest happiness of a club whose last participation in a semifinal of Champions League dated back to the season 1996/1997. This qualification became concrete when Ajax, dominating the game, creating many goal opportunities and leaving Juventus only crumbs, took a decisive advantage (2-1) thanks to central defender Matthijs de Ligt, 19 only.

It will be the first semifinal of Champions League for Ziyech and his compatriot Noussair Mazraoui (Morocco). For Onana as well. For Ronaldo and Juve, the road stops here.
