Meet Timothy Kudzanayi Kuhamba played a central role in building ZIMSAT-1, Zimbabwe’s first satellite.

Timothy Kudzanayi Kuhamba was one of three Zimbabwean engineers who helped build ZimSat-1, the country’s first satellite, at Japan’s Kyushu Institute of Technology, turning Zimbabwe’s ambitions in space technology into a working national programme.

ZimSat-1 was launched on November 7, 2022, from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, United States, before being deployed from the International Space Station. The satellite later joined the BIRDS-5 constellation, alongside Uganda’s PearlAfricaSat-1.

Kuhamba worked on the project alongside fellow Zimbabweans Victor Mukungunugwa, who served as project manager, and Ramson Munyaradzi Nyamukundiona. The three were part of a programme through which Zimbabwe sent engineers to Japan to develop expertise in satellite technology. For Timothy Kudzanayi Kuhamba, the satellite project was part of a much longer commitment to developing Zimbabwe’s space capabilities.

UNISEC-Global identifies him as one of the three engineers who built ZimSat-1 and notes his work promoting space education in Zimbabwe. He has served as the country’s World Space Week national coordinator since 2014 and received the Space Generation Advisory Council’s Africa Space Leader Award in 2019.

His academic path spans applied physics and engineering. Kuhamba holds an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics from the National University of Science and Technology, a postgraduate qualification in satellite communication and a Master’s degree in communication engineering.

He subsequently pursued space engineering studies at the Kyushu Institute of Technology in Japan. His work has also extended beyond satellite engineering. The World Space Week Association lists Kuhamba as a Principal Scientist with the Zimbabwe National Geospatial and Space Agency and credits him with pioneering space education awareness in the country.

ZimSat-1 was more than a symbolic launch. Its development demonstrated that Zimbabwean engineers could acquire specialised skills abroad and apply them to a national space programme.

The satellite formed part of Zimbabwe’s broader efforts through the Zimbabwe National Geospatial and Space Agency to build capacity in space science, geospatial technology and remote sensing.

The journey of Timothy Kudzanayi Kuhamba from applied physics into satellite engineering illustrates the human-capacity dimension of Africa’s emerging space sector, where the development of technical expertise is becoming as important as putting hardware into orbit.
