Tanzania has unveiled MV Mwanza, the largest locally built passenger and cargo vessel operating on Lake Victoria. The ship marks a major milestone in the country’s maritime transport sector and is expected to strengthen regional trade and mobility across East Africa.

Constructed at Mwanza Port, the vessel represents one of the most significant shipbuilding projects undertaken locally in the region. Officials say the project reflects Tanzania’s growing capacity to build and maintain major maritime infrastructure domestically.

The MV Mwanza measures approximately 92.6 metres in length and is designed to carry up to 1,200 passengers on a single voyage. In addition to passenger transport, the vessel can also accommodate 400 tonnes of cargo and more than 20 vehicles.

The dual passenger and freight capacity is expected to improve transport efficiency across Lake Victoria, which serves as a key economic corridor linking several East African countries.

Authorities say the vessel will help ease the movement of both people and goods while providing safer and more reliable transport across the lake.

The launch of MV Mwanza is expected to enhance trade and connectivity between Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya, all of which share the waters of Lake Victoria.

Lake transport remains a vital link for communities and businesses operating around the lake basin. Improved ferry services can reduce travel times, support tourism, and facilitate the movement of agricultural and commercial goods among the three countries.

Officials say the new vessel will contribute to regional economic integration by strengthening transport routes that connect ports and lakeside towns across East Africa.

The construction of MV Mwanza at Mwanza Port also highlights Tanzania’s effort to expand its domestic shipbuilding and maritime engineering capabilities.

By building the vessel locally, the project has supported the development of technical skills and created opportunities for engineers, technicians, and shipyard workers involved in the process.

Government officials say such investments are part of broader plans to modernise transport infrastructure and improve regional logistics networks. With its large passenger and cargo capacity, MV Mwanza is expected to play a central role in improving transport across Lake Victoria while supporting economic activity along one of Africa’s most important inland waterways.
