Shock grieved thousands of Paris residents and millions around the world as a fierce fire gutted down a better part of the historical Notre-Dame cathedral which has been standing for hundreds of years in the French capital causing the spire to collapse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The colossal fire, which broke\nout at around early evening hours, sent huge flames and huge-dark clouds that\nbillowed into the Paris skies as shocked tourists and the capital\u2019s residents\nwatched helplessly and in sheer horror. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time of going to press,\nthe cause of the fire had not been identified but the cathedral was under heavy\nrenovations and some quarters have associated the fire with the intense\nrestoration works which was commissioned after cracks started appearing in the\n850-year-old masterpiece of a cathedral which was inscribed as a World Heritage\nby the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization\n(UNESCO) way back in 1991. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notre-Dame cathedral attracts\nmillions of tourists every year who marvel at its artistic works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deputy Paris Mayor Emmanuel\nGregoire told news agencies the spire \u201ccollapsed inwards\u201d and the fire fighters\nand workers at the cathedral were \u201cfighting to save as much as they could of\nthe artworks\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No one seems sure yet on what\nwill happen next to the cathedral but the French President Emmanuel Macron has\ninsisted that it will be rebuilt.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Various world leaders and politicians alike have since expressed solidarity with France over the shocking incident.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n
