It is also the generic term for this exquisite piece of clothing, though different communities have different names for it;&nbsp;<em>riga<\/em>&nbsp;among the Hausa,&nbsp;<em>gandorra<\/em>&nbsp;among the Tuareg, and&nbsp;<em>boubou<\/em>&nbsp;in Senegal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the Yoruba, three clothing materials are often used for making elegant agbadas; sanyan (anaphe silk), etu (material with shades of blue and indigo) and alaari (a reddish cloth). Traditional, hand woven agbadas required at least 10 meters of material and can take up to a year to make, but embroidering machines have significantly cut down that time, and the cost of an agbada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/streamafrica.com\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/agbada1.png?w=696\" alt=\"agbada1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/streamafrica.com\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/agbada2.png?w=696\" alt=\"agbada2\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When completed, the agbada can have 6 pieces, though it normally has 4 pieces, and these are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Dashiki<\/em>\u2013 a sleeveless shirt<\/li><li><em>Sokoto ehumula-<\/em>&nbsp;the trousers, usually draw string pants<\/li><li><em>Ikori\/fila-<\/em>&nbsp;a hat<\/li><li><em>Agbada-&nbsp;<\/em>the flowing robe that covers everything<\/li><li><em>Gbariye-<\/em>a short sleeved flared tunic<\/li><li><em>Dandogo-&nbsp;<\/em>similar to the agbada but with a flared body<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Most agbada designs often feature an&nbsp;<em>aujufun,<\/em>&nbsp;an embroidered chest pocket made of anaphe silk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agbada is often used to signify power, wealth and authority, but its usage and designs vary from one community to another.
