{"id":73334,"date":"2020-06-29T19:24:35","date_gmt":"2020-06-29T23:24:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/?p=73334"},"modified":"2020-06-29T19:24:35","modified_gmt":"2020-06-29T23:24:35","slug":"statues-honoring-racist-past-are-coming-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/statues-honoring-racist-past-are-coming-down\/","title":{"rendered":"Statues honoring racist past are coming down"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Lisa Vives <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the occasion of the <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60th anniversary<\/a> of Congo\u2019s independence from Belgium, the Congolese diaspora is looking for the removal of racist statues but not only that. \u201cMany think that our political conscience has just sparked now, but we have been here for decades,&#8221; says <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Africaglobalnew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mireille-Thseusi Robert<\/a>, president of the feminist and anti-racism committee, Bamko-Cran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5506089157017573\" data-ad-slot=\"1517254432\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Statues are the tip of the iceberg, observes the author of a story in DW, the German news service, and part of a broad anti-racism struggle which the Congolese community and other African descendants have been highlighting for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In West Flanders there is a lot of racism, but it&#8217;s underneath,&#8221; Antoine Itoko told DW. &#8220;We cannot get the same job opportunities even if we have equal diplomas.&#8221; He joined the Black Lives Matter demonstration in Brussels on June 7 to commemorate Congolese victims as well as one of his friends, Mo\u00efse &#8220;Lamine&#8221; Bangoura, a victim of police violence in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Education Minister Caroline D\u00e9sir wants to make courses on the history of the DR Congo and colonialism compulsory, however the modification of school curricula can take up to two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5506089157017573\" data-ad-slot=\"1517254432\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the organization Reparons L&#8217;Histoire (Let&#8217;s repair history) has launched a petition to remove all the statues of Belgian King Leopold in Brussels by June 30. The online petition aimed to collect 25,000 signatures, but now counts over 80,000 names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many question the sincerity of the Belgian authorities. It took over 13 years of repeated requests by several organizations to select a location for the only square in Belgium dedicated to Patrice Lumumba, the first prime minister of the independent Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was finally inaugurated in 2018 to coincide with the 58th anniversary of Congolese independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We do not think it was a victory at all, but just peanuts done for electoral campaigning,&#8221; says Cafe Congo&#8217;s Gia Abrassart.
