The name djembe, when translated from the Bambara language, means \u201cgather peace.\u201d The Bamana people living in <a href=\"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/ads\/\">Mali <\/a>say that the name of the instrument was based in the saying \u201canke dje, anke be,\u201d meaning \u201ceveryone gather together in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The djembe dates back to the Mali <a href=\"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/the-african-talking-drum\/\">Empire<\/a> in 1230 AD. The instrument has three basic sounds, which are bass, tone, and slap. These sounds release low, medium, and high pitches. A skilled djembe <a href=\"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/appreciating-africas-scripts\/\">player<\/a> develops the ability to mix the sounds and produce intricate and complex <a href=\"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/special-tribute-to-africas-great-sons-may-their-souls-rest-in-eternal-peace\/\">rhythmic<\/a> patterns. To an untrained ear, different pitched sounds that a single djembe can create may seem like they are coming from several drums. In order to tune it properly, <a href=\"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/bakary-meite-gael-fickou-noble-gestures\/\">twists <\/a>in tightened verticals must be created. Additionally, the row of twisted verticals can serve as a decoration for the instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What materials is it made of?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Djembers are made of hardwood. It is important that the log used is hard and dense for better sound quality. <a href=\"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/the-history-of-bantu-people\/\">Lenke<\/a> is the most commonly used wood to create a djembe because of the quality sound it produces, as well as its spiritual qualities. Once a wood is chosen and prepared for djembe, a shell will then be carved into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Animal skin is also used as a material for a djembe. <a href=\"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/liberia-and-ethiopia-the-never-colonized-african-countries\/\">Goat skin<\/a> is the most popular but skin of cow, kangaroo, antelope, and horse can also be used. Nowadays, synthetic ropes are used commonly to produce modern djembes.
