{"id":43383,"date":"2020-04-14T23:12:06","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T03:12:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/?p=43383"},"modified":"2020-04-14T23:12:06","modified_gmt":"2020-04-15T03:12:06","slug":"african-climate-groups-denounce-bank-funds-for-exceptionally-high-risk-pipeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/african-climate-groups-denounce-bank-funds-for-exceptionally-high-risk-pipeline\/","title":{"rendered":"African climate groups denounce bank funds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Lisa Vives <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A climate justice movement of over 100 major organizations in Africa and abroad has joined hands to press the <a href=\"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\">African Development <\/a>Bank (AfDB) to drop its support of an \u201cexceptionally high-risk project\u201d that threatens the livelihoods of millions of people in East Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5506089157017573\" data-ad-slot=\"1517254432\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>In a letter to the Bank President, leaders of environmental and social groups from Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, and South Africa, among others, warned that the East African Crude Oil Pipeline posed global climate risks and environmental damage including harm to freshwater supplies and biodiversity in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At approximately 900 miles it would be the longest heated pipeline in the world, stretching from Uganda to Tanzania. Further, the project is being developed in a political climate in which human rights defenders and journalists expressing criticism of the project and associated facilities face harassment and threats of retaliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The major risk is fossil fuel expansion, the group charged in an open letter to Bank President Akinwumi Adesina &#8211; and the resulting emissions that could harm the surrounding farming communities in both countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5506089157017573\" data-ad-slot=\"1517254432\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Corruption and human-rights violations from large-scale land acquisition and resettlement, and threats to livelihoods, biodiversity and natural habitats along the pipeline route are other factors, the group said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe bank should be seeking opportunities to fund renewables that can contribute to the region\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/article\/2020-01-28-financing-the-east-african-crude-oil-pipeline-is-a-big-mistake\/\">energy <\/a>needs in a clean and rights-compatible manner,\u201d said Diana Nabiruma of the Africa Institute for Energy Governance (AFIEGO), based in Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2026 The last thing that Africa\u2019s premier development bank should be considering is the financing of a massive oil pipeline,\u201d said Eugenie Cha, Africa Program Director for Inclusive <a href=\"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\">Development International<\/a>. \u201cThis project is not only wholly incompatible with the African Development Bank\u2019s climate commitments, but it also poses unacceptable risks to local communities and ecosystems.\u201d \u201cWe in the Democratic Republic of Congo are also concerned that this project could potentially endanger vitally important and biodiverse ecosystems, such as Virunga National Park,\u201d said Bantu Lukambo of the DRC-based environmental protection group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5506089157017573\" data-ad-slot=\"1517254432\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, local officials in Uganda insist the pipeline project is not dead and still plan to start construction before 2021. As recently as August, Standard Bank said the project has \u201clots of interest\u201d and that finding additional financing would \u201cnot be a problem\u201d.
