The English name &#8220;henna&#8221; comes from the&nbsp;Arabic&nbsp;\u062d\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0651\u0627\u0621&nbsp;&nbsp;pronounced&nbsp;&nbsp;or, colloquially&nbsp;\u062d\u0646\u0627, loosely pronounced as&nbsp;\/\u0127inna\/.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/hands-3444087_640.jpg?w=696&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4086\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The name&nbsp;<em>henna<\/em>&nbsp;also refers to the&nbsp;dye&nbsp;prepared from the plant and the art of temporary&nbsp;tattooing&nbsp;based on those dyes. Henna has been used since antiquity to dye skin, hair, and fingernails, as well as fabrics including&nbsp;silk,&nbsp;wool, andleather. The name is mistakenly used in other skin and hair dyes, such as&nbsp;<em>black henna<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>neutral henna<\/em>, neither of which are derived from the henna plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5506089157017573\" data-ad-slot=\"1517254432\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>The henna plant is native to northern Africa, western and&nbsp;southern Asia, and northern&nbsp;Australasia&nbsp;in semi-arid zones and tropical.&nbsp;It produces the most dye when grown in temperatures between 35 and 45 \u00b0C (95&nbsp;and 113&nbsp;\u00b0F).&nbsp;During the onset of precipitation intervals, the plant grows rapidly; putting out new shoots, then growth slows. The leaves gradually yellow and fall during prolonged dry or cool intervals. It does not thrive where minimum temperatures are below 11&nbsp;\u00b0C. Temperatures below 5&nbsp;\u00b0C will kill the henna plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/mehandi-3777366_640.jpg?w=696&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4087\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The different words for henna in ancient languages imply that it had more than one point of discovery and origin, as well as different pathways of daily and ceremonial use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Henna has been used to adorn young women&#8217;s bodies as part of social and holiday celebrations since the late&nbsp;Bronze Age&nbsp;in the eastern&nbsp;Mediterranean. The earliest text mentioning henna in the context of marriage and fertility celebrations comes from the&nbsp;Ugaritic&nbsp;legend of&nbsp;Baal&nbsp;and&nbsp;Anath,&nbsp;which has references to women marking themselves with henna in preparation to meet their husbands, and Anath adorning herself with henna to celebrate a victory over the enemies of Baal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/henna-1370136_640.jpg?w=696&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4088\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Wall paintings excavated at Akrotiri (dating prior to the eruption of Thera in 1680&nbsp;BCE) show women with markings consistent with henna on their nails, palms and soles, in a tableau consistent with the henna <a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/images\/search\/henna\/?pagi=1\">bridal <\/a>description from Ugarit.&nbsp;Many statuettes of young women dating between 1500 and 500&nbsp;BCE along the Mediterranean coastline have raised hands with markings consistent with henna.
