{"id":40541,"date":"2020-04-07T16:20:23","date_gmt":"2020-04-07T20:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/?p=40541"},"modified":"2020-04-07T16:20:23","modified_gmt":"2020-04-07T20:20:23","slug":"uproar-as-french-doctors-suggests-testing-coronavirus-drugs-on-africans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/uproar-as-french-doctors-suggests-testing-coronavirus-drugs-on-africans\/","title":{"rendered":"Racism uproar as French doctors suggests testing Coronavirus drugs on Africans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Lisa Vives<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a debate on Coronavirus drug testing on French TV, Jean-Paul Mira, head of intensive care at a Parisian hospital said: \u201cIf I can be provocative, shouldn\u2019t we be doing this Coronavirus vaccine trial in Africa, where there are no masks, no treatments, no resuscitation\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He continued: \u201cIt\u2019s a little bit like it&#8217;s been done for certain AIDS studies, where among prostitutes, we try things, because we know that they are highly exposed and don&#8217;t protect themselves\u2026&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The response was explosive. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\">World Health Organization<\/a> head Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called the remark a hangover from the \u201ccolonial mentality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a disgrace, appalling, to hear during the 21<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;century, to hear from scientists, that kind of remark. We condemn this in the strongest terms possible, and we assure you that this will not happen,\u201d Tedros said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfrica can\u2019t and won\u2019t be a testing ground for any vaccine,\u201d he added in regards to the proposed Coronavirus drugs&#8217; testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Africa isn&#8217;t a testing lab,&#8221; Ivorian professional football player Didier Drogba, who used to play for Chelsea, wrote on Twitter. &#8220;I would like to vividly denounce those demeaning, false and most of all deeply racist words.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olivier Faure, of France&#8217;s Socialist Party, said the remarks were hardly a provocation. &#8220;It&#8217;s not provocation, it&#8217;s just racism,&#8221; he wrote on Twitter. &#8220;Africa is not the laboratory of Europe. Africans are not rats!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The anti-racism group SOS Racisme called on France&#8217;s media regulator, the Conseil Sup\u00e9rieur de L\u2019Audiovisuel (CSA), to formally condemn the remarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s scandalous to see that not a single regulatory authority has come out to publicly denounce these statements,&#8221; Amar Thioune, a member of SOS Racisme, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Le Club des avocats au Maroc, a Moroccan lawyers&#8217; collective, said it was suing Jean-Paul Mira for racial defamation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mira later apologized in a statement published by his employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I want to present all my apologies to those who were hurt, shocked and felt insulted by the remarks that I clumsily expressed on LCI this week,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/\">Africa Global News Publication<\/a> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Lisa Vives During a debate on Coronavirus drug testing on French TV, Jean-Paul Mira, head of intensive care at a Parisian hospital said: \u201cIf I can be provocative, shouldn\u2019t we be doing this Coronavirus vaccine trial in Africa, where there are no masks, no treatments, no resuscitation\u201d?
