{"id":3899,"date":"2019-11-20T11:03:50","date_gmt":"2019-11-20T16:03:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/?p=3899"},"modified":"2019-11-20T11:03:50","modified_gmt":"2019-11-20T16:03:50","slug":"politics-risks-grow-for-african-leaders-seeking-extended-term","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/politics-risks-grow-for-african-leaders-seeking-extended-term\/","title":{"rendered":"Politics: Risks grow for African leaders seeking extended term"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Lisa Vives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not a piece of cake these days for leaders of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-africa-leaders-democracy-factbox\/what-limits-how-african-leaders-cling-to-power-for-decades-idUSKBN1WX1KP\">African countries plotting to rewrite their constitutions and give themselves another decade<\/a> or two in power, frustrating efforts by citizen groups to give other leaders a chance to rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the endgame facing Guinean President Alpha Conde who is\npoised to approve a new constitution favorable to extending his stay in power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But to his discomfort, a people\u2019s movement of opposition has turned out every Thursday in Conakry, the Guinean capital, according to media accounts, with some hundreds of thousands of citizens saying \u201cno\u201d to a constitutional rewrite for a presidential third term, something which is expected to change the politics of the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>YouTube videos show marchers filling the streets, waving signs\nreading \u201cAlpha Conde dictateur\u201d, \u201c2020 \u2013 someone else!\u201d and \u201cTwo terms is\nenough!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf Alpha persists in changing the constitution against the will\nof the Guinean people, there is a clear risk of confrontation that could lead\nto violence that threatens peace and stability in Guinea,\u201d said Cellou Dalein\nDiallo, whose own bid for president was defeated twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conde\u2019s election in 2010 was faulted by the Carter Center which noted several irregularities in in the politics process leading to and during the elections. That&#8217;s, the voter registration, vote counting and the loss of nearly one million voters from the final count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cond\u00e9, 81, has thus far not declared publicly his plans for a third term but he has backed a new constitution that would allow him to do so but, at the same time, he doesn&#8217;t look like he is ready to quit politics or relinquish power. And a billboard hoisted outside Guinea&#8217;s National Assembly reads: \u201cYes to a referendum. Yes to a new Constitution. We support you for life.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, a court in Guinea handed down jail terms to\nfive opposition and civil society leaders for organizing protests against a\npossible change to the constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Complicating matters further are the outside influencers \u2013 the\nU.S. and Russia \u2013 injecting their political biases into the mix. U.S. Secretary\nof State Mike Pompeo recently tweeted that there\u2019s a \u201ccritical need for regular\ndemocratic transitions of power for a thriving democracy\u201d while former Russian\nambassador to Guinea Alexander Bregadze expressed strong support for changing\nthe rules. \u201cConstitutions are not dogma, the Bible or Koran,\u201d he said, adding\n\u201cas the popular Russian saying goes, you don\u2019t change horses at a river\ncrossing.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Lisa Vives It\u2019s not a piece of cake these days for leaders of African countries plotting to rewrite their constitutions and give themselves another decade or two in power, frustrating efforts by citizen groups to give other leaders a chance to rule.
