A person with fever and chills should rush to the nearest health\nfacility, get tested and be put on treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But most of these facilities lack the resources to handle\nsuch issues, on account of their distance from commercial hubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a challenge that has plagued many a remote center, and\nGhana has been implementing a solution that is encouraging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"557\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/zipline-drone.jpg?resize=696%2C557&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34942\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/zipline-drone.jpg?w=900&amp;ssl=1 900w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/zipline-drone.jpg?resize=300%2C240&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/zipline-drone.jpg?resize=768%2C614&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/zipline-drone.jpg?resize=525%2C420&amp;ssl=1 525w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/zipline-drone.jpg?resize=696%2C557&amp;ssl=1 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the Fly to save a life project, Ghana has been using\ndrones to deliver medicines, vaccines, and blood products to remote health\nfacilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project started in April 2019, as a partnership between\nthe Ministry of Health and Zipline, an American company which had already been\ninvolved in a similar endeavor in Rwanda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative has been supported by organizations including\nthe Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Vaccine Alliance, and GAVI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zipline has established distribution centers, doubling as drone hubs, where these critical medical supplies are stocked; these centralized locations reduce operational costs for remote hospitals, which don\u2019t have to worry about issues such as vaccines going bad due to a lack of refrigeration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The drones operate within a radius of about 80 kilometers, as their range is double that; they can fly at 100kph, so deliveries can be made in under an hour. It can carry a payload of 1.75 kilograms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5506089157017573\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"1517254432\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Distribution Centers<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The first such hub to be opened was in the town of Omenako\nin the Eastern Region. At its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghanaweb.com\/GhanaHomePage\/NewsArchive\/World-s-largest-medical-drone-delivery-service-takes-off-in-Ghana-741285\">launch<\/a>,\nit was revealed that this hub would supply 148 assorted medical supplies-antivenom,\nblood components, hormones, and vaccines. All these and more, a text or a call\naway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are four centers- besides Omenako, there\u2019s a\ndistribution center in Mampong (for Ashanti Region), Kukua (North Eastern\nRegion) and Wiawso (Western North Region). It is at these hubs that some built\ninfrastructure is needed; the drone doesn\u2019t need to land at its destination.\nThe drone consignment is airdropped and a parachute opens up to ensure the\nconsignment lands as gently as possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the drones have parachutes, meant to be deployed in an\nemergency; so far, the drone service has suffered one reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghanaweb.com\/GhanaHomePage\/NewsArchive\/Zipline-medical-drone-crashes-in-Dawu-859234\">drone\ncrash<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/fallen-zipline.jpg?resize=600%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34943\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/fallen-zipline.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/fallen-zipline.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/fallen-zipline.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/fallen-zipline.jpg?resize=420%2C420&amp;ssl=1 420w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption>There were no injuries on the ground in this otherwise isolated incident<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Each center can make 500 flights a day, but the current aim\nis for 600 daily deliveries to 2,000 health facilities for the four centers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of February, the Zipline drones had delivered some 2,000\npints of blood, and had undertaken over 4,000 flights across Ghana. In Rwanda,\nit has conducted 13,000 deliveries so far, so the trajectory in Ghana is on\ncourse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, the greatest downside to this program is probably the cost; the government paid some $12 million to Zipline to get this service for the next four years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5506089157017573\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"1517254432\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s an amount that could be used for other projects according\nto its critics; it could for instance but some 40 fully equipped British\nambulances. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But then again, assuming such ambulances are all dedicated to individual health centers, the Omenako center alone covered 52 centers at the start of the project; the drones can\u2019t carry people, but at least they can make sure all the critical, time sensitive medical supplies are within easy reach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Africa Global News Publication <\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beyond the main cities, many challenges abound on the continent; roads may be poor to nonexistent, cellular services and other amenities unreliable.
