Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, announced the finding together with Dr. Jean-Jacques Muyembe, director of Congo\u2019s National Institute for Biomedical Research and Dr. Michael\u00a0 J. Ryan, director of emergency response for the World Health Organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5506089157017573\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"1517254432\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Psychologically, Dr.\nMuyembe said, news of a cure could change the course of this outbreak, which is\nthe worst of the 10 that Congo has endured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After years of war and\ngenocide, residents of eastern Congo are deeply distrustful of the government\nin the capital, Kinshasa. Rumors have spread that Ebola does not exist, or that\ntreatment teams steal blood and body parts for witchcraft. Treatment centers\nhave been shot up or burned down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow we can say that 90\npercent can come out of treatment cured, they will start believing it and\ndeveloping trust,\u201d Dr. Muyembe said. \u201cThe first ones to transmit this\ninformation will be the patients themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Muyembe, 77, whom Dr.\nFauci referred to as a \u201ctrue hero,\u201d has been fighting Ebola since it first\nappeared in what was then Zaire in 1976. (He) is a unique and courageous\nAfrican health leader\u201d, said Peter Piot, Professor of Global Health and\nDirector of the London School of Hygiene &amp; Tropical Medicine, who first met\nMuyembe at Yambuku. \u201cHe stayed in Congo during decades of very turbulent\nhistory and succeeded in maintaining scientific excellence and integrity\nthroughout. He has trained several generations of much needed physicians,\nmicrobiologists, and public health workers in DRC. He is a role model for many\nof us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The epidemic, which was declared a public health emergency last month, has now infected about 2,800 known patients, killing more than 1,800 of them, according to the world health body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5506089157017573\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"1517254432\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>The new Ebola experimental treatments, known as REGN-EB3 and mAb-114, are both cocktails of monoclonal antibodies that are infused intravenously into the blood. The drugs are most effective when used as treatments for patients with low levels of Ebola in the bloodstream, according to the peer-reviewed journal Nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both drugs are U.S. made.\nREGN-EB3 is made by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals of Tarrytown, N.Y. Dr. Fauci\u2019s\ninstitute, which is part of the National Institutes of Health, developed mAb114\nand licensed production last year to Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, a Miami\ncompany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two new therapies were\namong four tested in a trial that has enrolled almost 700 patients since\nNovember. The two worked so well that a committee recommended that the other\ntwo treatments, ZMapp, made by Mapp Biopharmaceutical, and remdesivir, made by\nGilead Sciences, be stopped. All patients will now be offered either the\nRegeneron or the Biotherapeutics drug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fauci paid tribute to all\nof those involved in the trial in four towns: Beni, Katwa, Butembo and Mangina.\nNGOs including International Medical Corps and Doctors Without Borders \u201cput\ntheir lives on the line every day to care for patients in extremely difficult\nconditions in the area where the outbreak is occurring,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Decades ago, Dr. Muyembe pioneered the use of survivors\u2019 blood serum \u2014 which contains antibodies \u2014 in order to save patients. The two experiment treatments that proved successful last week descend in part from his original research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5506089157017573\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"1517254432\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked how he felt about\nthat during a telephone news conference, Dr. Muyembe said through a translator:\n\u201cI\u2019m a little sentimental. I had this idea a long time ago, and I\u2019ve waited\npatiently for it.
