This means literally undressing her, and she will walk\naround stark naked until a man claims her as his wife. In this world, girls get\ntheir clothing from their fathers or from their husbands. It is a grave offense\nto buy your own clothes as a girl. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ejem and her ilk have to endure the jeers and leers of men\nwho are always clothed. And it\u2019s hard to keep covered women as friends because\ntheir husbands could pop in any time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it is the law to remain naked, it is hard to remain\nemployed in mainstream jobs when such workplaces are unwelcoming to such naked\nwomen, especially those who are advancing in years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most uncovered women are, ironically, said to be working in\ntextile factories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the story unfolds, it emerges that these are problems\nonly facing poor, uncovered girls; the parents of rich girls can clothe their\ndaughters in \u201cfather-clothes\u201d until they have \u201cwife-clothes\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, as one character puts it, \u201cWhen you have as much money as I do, you exist above every law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5506089157017573\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"1517254432\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Osu<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>While the plight of these uncovered women is plain to see,\nthere\u2019s an even greater suffering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are people of the osu caste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to get back to the real world for context here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the Igbo of eastern Nigeria, there are two castes; the\nNwadiala and the <a href=\"https:\/\/mm-gold.azureedge.net\/Articles\/Leo_Igwe\/Osu_caste_system.html\">Osu<\/a>.\nThe former are the freeborn and masters, the latter outcasts if not slaves. If\nthere were human sacrifices to be made, the Osu were used. For instance, two\nosus would be buried alongside a chief in ancient Igboland to serve him in the\nnext life. During times of pestilence, animals or osus would be tied at the\ntown\u2019s gate to ward of pestilence. Often too, the osu were dedicated to the\nmany deities the Igbo believed in. They and their descendants for all times\nbelonged to the deity\/shrine. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chinua Achebe wrote of it in <em>No Longer at Ease<\/em>, there have been attempts over the past many years to eradicate the caste system, but it clearly is a lingering issue in today\u2019s eastern Nigeria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5506089157017573\"\n     data-ad-slot=\"1517254432\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Just last month, a governor was making yet another <a href=\"https:\/\/punchng.com\/eradicate-osu-caste-obiano-tells-igbo-traditional-rulers\/\">appeal<\/a>\nto eradicate the caste system. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much like the real world osu, the osu in <em>Skinned<\/em> suffer silently; they are the ones relegated to the menial chores, they aren\u2019t allowed to interact with others.
