It\u2019s quite odd, that, despite the scale of the ongoing\ncoronavirus outbreak, the World Health Organization is unwilling to label it a\n\u2018pandemic\u2019, and a group of scientists are faulting them for this reluctance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s pretty clear we\u2019re in a pandemic and I don\u2019t\nknow why WHO is resisting that,\u201d said the director for the Center for\nInfectious Disease Research and Policy (U of Minnesota), Michael Osterholm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what really is a pandemic? From WHO<\/a>,\nit is a \u201cworldwide spread of a new disease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention defines<\/a>\na pandemic as an epidemic that has spread over several countries or continents,\nusually affecting a large number of people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The WHO\u2019s situation report, as of 08 March 2020, confirms\nthat more than 100 countries and territories have lab-confirmed cases of\nCOVID-19, the new virus causing this disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Globally, there are 105,586 cases, with 3,100 deaths in\nChina, where the virus was first detected in Wuhan city, Hubei province, and\n484 deaths outside China, where new cases keep popping up. And what\u2019s WHO\u2019s\nrisk assessment for the whole world?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very High. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are at a point in which COVID-19 cases have been reported\nin all continents except for Antarctica; cases have begun emerging<\/a>\nin Africa, which, like other regions of the world, is reporting both imported\ncases and incidences resulting from local transmission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here in the more disadvantaged corners of the world, a\nsevere outbreak would truly be disastrous; there are no resources to enforce\nprovince-wide quarantines, as China has managed to do around Wuhan, placing 11\nmillion people in lockdown, or as Italy has recently announced, quarantining\nsome 15 million people in the north, the epicenter of their  outbreak. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Health services tend to be inadequate, and the wealthy will\noften fly out for the best medical attention; a common joke in Kenya is that\nthe only medical facility the wealthy trust in Kenya is the Lee Funeral Home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The continent is poorly prepared, and I think if the WHO\ndeclared the ongoing covid-19 cases a pandemic, It would inject a greater sense\nof urgency in being prepared for it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, such a declaration could probably spur the\nrelease of funds from the Pandemic\nEmergency Financing Facility<\/a>; this World Bank initiative pumped at least $50\nmillion<\/a> to tackle the current Ebola outbreak in D.R. Congo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the context of covid-19, the initiative would probably\nhelp in getting all nations get proper testing facilities to confirm suspect\ncases; currently 33 of 47 sub-Saharan nations have testing facilities, meaning\nif cases erupt in the other 14 nations, local transmission will have taken root\nbefore the tests are confirmed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s also the matter of adequate personal protective\nequipment; WHO has acknowledged<\/a>\na looming shortage, one that will severely frontline health workers. With most\nof the global supply coming from China, whose factories are not working at full\ncapacity, if at all, , and the general public making a run for the available\nmasks, respirators, face shields and whatnot, it is health worker who will be\nleft most exposed. Averting such a situation would require a significant\nmobilization of funds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides, WHO declaring it a pandemic would confirm what we\nare already seeing- panic buying in anticipation of regional quarantines and crashes\nin the stock market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Declaring a panic wouldn\u2019t set the world on fire after all; the\n2009 H1N1<\/a>\noutbreak was declared a pandemic two months after it was first detected, and it\nremained classified as such until 2010.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Declaring it so would compel everyone to address it with the\nurgency and seriousness it deserves. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
