{"id":2884,"date":"2019-07-09T09:50:55","date_gmt":"2019-07-09T13:50:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/?p=2884"},"modified":"2019-07-09T09:50:55","modified_gmt":"2019-07-09T13:50:55","slug":"lesley-nneka-arimah-bags-the-2019-caine-prize-for-african-writing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/lesley-nneka-arimah-bags-the-2019-caine-prize-for-african-writing\/","title":{"rendered":"Lesley Nneka Arimah, a British-born Nigerian writer, bags the 2019 Caine Prize for African Writing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A British-born Nigerian writer, Lesley Nneka Arimah, has won the 2019 Caine Prize for African Writing courtesy of her satirical short story Skinned. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skinned focuses on the challenges that women face in many African societies that are still dominated by traditional rituals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The short story keenly follows the fortunes of\nEjem, a girl who is from a culture in which girls go uncovered at a certain age\nand go without dress or naked up to a point where they are claimed by a\nhusband. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 36-years-old Lesley Nneka Arimah said the idea of the short story came following a conversation on the differences between single and married women in Nigeria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA newly wed friend marvelled at how her\nfamily \u2013usually difficult \u2013 became easy going after her wedding. Marriage gave unconventional\nwomen cover to be themselves, we observed,\u201d Lesley Nneka Arimah said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While speaking to BBC, Lesley Nneka Arimah\nsaid her story is set in what she terms as \u201can alternate Nigeria&#8230;.a parallel\nuniverse to ours\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She employs the setting to \u201ctouch on this\naspect of Nigerian culture that privileges marriage and a woman being married\n(being) essentially her duty\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement, the Caine Prize said: \u201cWith a\nwit, <em>prescience, and a wicked imagination, Skinned\nis a bold and unsettling tale of bodily autonomy and womanhood, and the fault\nlines along which solidarities are formed and broken.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Peter Kimani, the chairperson of the judging panel, described Nneka\u2019s story \u201ca unique retake of women\u2019s struggle for inclusion in a society regulated by rituals\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nneka won the prize <a href=\"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/caine-prize-shortlist-announced\/\">out of a list of five nominees<\/a> that was announced earlier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\n2017, Nneka was shortlisted for the Caine award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The $12,000 worth Caine Prize is usually awarded for African short stories published in English. According to the Caine Prize <a href=\"http:\/\/caineprize.com\/\">website<\/a>,  &#8220;the prize was launched in 2000 to encourage and highlight the richness and diversity of African writing by bringing it to a wider audience internationally.
