At least 13 people have been killed after the violent dispersal of sit-in protestors who\u2019ve been camped at Sudan\u2019s military headquarters in Khartoum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors, an\norganization aligned with the protestors, various security forces were involved\nin the operation, resulting<\/a>\nin a \u201clarge number of casualties.\u201d The current number of fatalities is that of\nconfirmed cases, as the group works to access the protest site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Rapid Support Forces and the army and police and\nmilitia battalions dispersed the peaceful sit-in,\u201d iterated the Alliance for\nFreedom and Change, an umbrella organization for the protestors who\u2019ve been at\nthe military headquarters since April 6th<\/sup>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

CCSD has also claimed that security forces have been chasing protestors even within the grounds of the East Nile Hospital, and have fired live ammunition in the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Transitional Military Council, the junta currently\nleading Sudan after deposing Omar Bashir in April, has however refuted the\naccusations leveled against its forces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to its spokesperson, their forces were engaged in an operation nearby, and didn’t target the protestors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe concerned authorities decided to move towards this\narea, to implement security for the society\u2026We did not target the sit-in,\u201d\nexplained Sham Eddin Kabashi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The protestors, who are demanding the restoration of a fully civilian government, have been targeted before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just days after they began their sit in, more than 20 protestors had been killed<\/a>, with a further 150 injured. By and large, these deaths were blamed on agents of the National Intelligence and Security Service, whose leadership had aligned itself with Omar Bashir, who was deposed on April 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In mid-May, at least 6 people<\/a>, including a\nmember of the security forces, were killed after a gunman fired upon the sit-in\nprotestors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Council stated at the time that the attack may have been instigated by groups that are \u201cworking hard to abort any negotiations [between the junta and opposition parties].\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
