{"id":189076,"date":"2023-05-02T22:28:12","date_gmt":"2023-05-03T02:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/?p=189076"},"modified":"2024-10-13T23:59:52","modified_gmt":"2024-10-13T23:59:52","slug":"united-nations-mission-in-south-sudan-unmiss-rehabilitates-vital-bridges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/united-nations-mission-in-south-sudan-unmiss-rehabilitates-vital-bridges\/","title":{"rendered":"United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Rehabilitates Vital Bridges"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>Engineers from China serving for peace with UNMISS have completed rehabilitating two bridges\u2014Bili and Sopo\u2014as well as a 40-kilometer stretch along the Wau-Raja road<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(AGN) UNITY, South Sudan,\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/unmiss.unmissions.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South Sudan<\/a> won its hard-fought independence from its northern neighbour, Sudan, in 2011, the country\u2019s infrastructure, especially road networks and bridges, were in extremely poor condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In subsequent years, with help from international friends such as the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), much has been done to enable communities across this young nation convene and connect, especially during the rainy season when roads are frequently flooded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, engineers from China serving for peace with UNMISS have completed rehabilitating two bridges\u2014Bili and Sopo\u2014as well as a 40-kilometer stretch along the Wau-Raja road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With nearly 300 kilometers separating communities living in Raja county from Western Bahr El Ghazal\u2019s capital, Wau, this, as anybody could ascertain, is a welcome development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese two vital bridges were destroyed by heavy rainfall. Now, thanks to UNMISS, they have been rebuilt, enabling us to reenergize trade, have access to healthcare and move freely 365 days a year,\u201d revealed Daffalla Futur, Acting Executive Director of Deim Zubeir, a&nbsp;<em>payam<\/em>&nbsp;[administrative division] located within Raja county.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Years of civil war allowed minimal progress in infrastructural development, and the country\u2019s road network has suffered greatly<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>But, according to Mr. Futur, work remains to be done, especially filling out three dangerously large potholes which have in the past led to vehicular accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, though, Mr. Futur and the communities he represents are happy with the ease of access facilitated by dedicated Chinese peacekeepers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While visiting the project site, Sam Muhumure, Head of the UNMISS Field Office in Wau assured people of the UN Peacekeeping mission\u2019s continuous efforts to ensuring Raja town remains connected to the rest of Western Bahr El Ghazal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYears of civil war allowed minimal progress in infrastructural development, and the country\u2019s road network has suffered greatly, with rampant insecurity on the poorly maintained roads negatively affecting economic and social development,\u201d stated Mr Muhumure.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know that when people are able to travel to meet with each other, it is easier to build trust and confidence,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cImportantly, good roads allow our peacekeepers and humanitarian colleagues to ensure that people are safe and the most vulnerable receive timely aid.
