They would say \u2018look at how your mouth and lip are\u2019, which made her embarrassed. She used to hide her mouth with her hand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"450\" width=\"696\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/SNC220225_AWA_SNC09656_BEFORE_EB-1024x662.jpg?resize=696%2C450&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"five-year-old\u2019s smile\" class=\"wp-image-188870\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Awa, age 5, maxillofacial patient, before admission.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Her uncle Woury became even more determined to find help for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One day Woury was overjoyed when he heard that international charity Mercy Ships was bringing a hospital ship to the port of Dakar to provide free surgeries and medical training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Upon seeing his daughter, tears sprang to his eyes, and he said a word of thanks for his brother-in-law<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He told Rougui: \u201cRun, run, run to Dakar! These people will help her and fix her smile. People will not even recognise Awa after!\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But soon after the pandemic began, meaning surgeries could not go ahead as planned. Her uncle kept in touch with Mercy Ships determined to ensure Awa had surgery and encourage Rougui to not give up hope for her healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an unexpected tragedy, Woury passed away just a few months before Mercy Ships returned to Senegal in early 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Rougui decided to honour her brother\u2019s last wish and she and Awa, now five, made the long journey to the Africa Mercy, where Woury\u2019s dream was finally realised and Awa received successful surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cOn the day of our discharge from the Africa Mercy, I thought of many things. The last time Awa and I left a hospital, it was the day she was born, and she had a cleft-lip. Everything is different now. She is healed, we have been well cared for, and we get to go home together. It is a great joy, this day!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon they made the long journey back home, where Awa\u2019s father was awaiting them with a big smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon seeing his daughter, tears sprang to his eyes and he said a word of thanks to his brother-in-law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cIf her uncle Woury would have been alive and he had seen her now, he would have been so happy. He would say that God did what he had always hoped for.
