In 2017, within several\nmonths after beginning 737 MAX deliveries, engineers at Boeing identified that\nthe 737 MAX display system software did not correctly meet the AOA Disagree\nalert requirements. The software delivered to Boeing linked the AOA Disagree\nalert to the AOA indicator, which is an optional feature on the MAX and the NG.\nAccordingly, the software activated the AOA Disagree alert only if an airline\nopted for the AOA indicator,\u201d\nread part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/boeing.mediaroom.com\/news-releases-statements?item=130431\">statement<\/a> from Boeing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\noptional package that activates the AOA Disagree alert has been purchased by\nonly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/05\/business\/boeing-737-max-warning-light.html\">20% of airlines<\/a>, which means the vast majority of Max\n8 planes do not have the feature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"464\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/800px-Ethiopian_Airlines_ET-AVJ_takeoff_from_TLV_46461974574.jpg?resize=696%2C464&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET 302. This angle has a bearing on the plane\u2019s ability to maintain\nlift, as beyond an optimum range, the plane will stall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AOA\nreading is given by two sensors in the Max 8, and the alert would light up if\nthe two sensors reported different readings. With the alert, the pilot would\nknow if the readings are erroneous, and would maybe respond differently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More\npertinently, the Max 8 has a poorly known feature called the Maneuvering\nCharacteristics Augmentation System, which automatically responds to AOA\nwarnings suggesting an impending stall. It is MCAS, activated by erroneous AOA\ndata, that repeatedly pointed the Max 8 nose downwards while attempting to\ncorrect for a nonexistent impending stall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0As it were, the crew of the first fatal Max 8 crash, Lion Air 610, seem to have encountered the problem before the fatal incident. In these prior incidences, the crew deactivated the electrical trim system, thus disabling MCAS from sending the plane into a nosedive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By Matengo Chwanya
