{"id":164964,"date":"2021-02-01T12:34:41","date_gmt":"2021-02-01T16:34:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/?p=164964"},"modified":"2021-02-01T12:34:41","modified_gmt":"2021-02-01T16:34:41","slug":"drug-companies-scooping-super-profits-from-the-peoples-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/drug-companies-scooping-super-profits-from-the-peoples-vaccine\/","title":{"rendered":"Drug companies scooping profits from \u2018people\u2019s vaccine\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>(AGN) &#8211; Protected by undisclosed trade secrets and exclusive patents, a small group of drug companies has ensured that <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-55170756\" target=\"_blank\">rich countries<\/a> can lay claim to most of their miracle drugs while limiting the number of companies that can also produce the vital vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, opposition is building to the patent holders who use taxpayer dollars to fund research and development (R&amp;D) but refuse to share their drug formulas with manufacturers in developing countries that could make their vaccines free and available to all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moderna, for example, through its COVID-19 vaccine partnership with the U.S. government, scored $2.48 billion in R&amp;D (research and development) and supply funding from taxpayers for its program, sparking outcry from consumer watchdogs and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is the people\u2019s vaccine,\u201d objected consumer advocate Public Citizen. \u201cIt is not merely Moderna\u2019s. Federal scientists helped invent it and taxpayers are funding its development. We all have played a role. It should belong to humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe paid for the drugs,\u201d echoed Dean Baker, senior economist at the Center for Economic and Policy Research, \u201cand one of the things we would have liked is full transparency on all of the research results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no good argument for keeping (test) data secret,\u201d he said. \u201cBut most of the drug companies insist on that. Maybe they want to misrepresent the safety or effectiveness of their drugs,\u201d he surmised.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, in an open letter to major drug companies from Doctors without Borders, the group wrote in part: \u201cClearly neither yours nor any other company can produce all the doses needed to vaccinate the whole world\u2019s population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour company faces a choice. Either you can defend business as usual and deny hundreds of millions rapid access to the vaccine in defense of your monopoly power.
