Plastic bottles and\ndiscarded wrappings are an eyesore during such meets, be it a sporting event,\nor a music festival. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"510\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/What-follows-after-marathons.jpg?resize=510%2C680&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Street littered with plastic bottles after the London Marathon\" data-id=\"1442\" data-link=\"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/?attachment_id=1442\" class=\"wp-image-1442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/What-follows-after-marathons.jpg?w=510&amp;ssl=1 510w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/What-follows-after-marathons.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/What-follows-after-marathons.jpg?resize=315%2C420&amp;ssl=1 315w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><figcaption>Street littered with plastic bottles after the London Marathon<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to organizers, the London marathon used an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2019\/04\/29\/london-marathons-method-reducing-plastic-bottles-edible-seaweed-pouches\/\">704,000 plastic bottles<\/a>, which is an improvement from 2018, when 920,000 were used. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To reduce the number of (single-use)\nplastic bottles at the marathon, and hopefully in future marathons, the London\nmarathon partnered with the Skipping Rocks Lab to use their Ooho pouches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ooho are liquid-filled pouches\nthat were made available to runners at mile 23, with 30,000 such pouches brought\nfor the race. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holding between 20 to 150mL, these pouches made from a material called Notpla (Not Plastic?), which is itself made from brown seaweed. These pouches are edible and biodegradable, taking between four to six weeks to completely degrade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply then, the runners bit\ninto the pouch to get the liquid contained, and if they didn\u2019t mind the tastelessness\nof the pouch, could just swallow it afterwards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond races, Ooho can also\nused in other sectors, as it can also hold condiments and sauces, alcohol, and\nwater. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The London marathon was its\nbig experiment, to assess whether it can be used on a massive scale, and not\nremain a fantastic idea for only a niche. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not thus be surprised if Ooho-like\ntechnology comes to you in a few years; Skipping Rocks wants to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notpla.com\/technology\/\">produce nets<\/a>, sachets, and sealable\nfilms from notpla. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"270\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/notpla-net.jpg?resize=270%2C270&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"A notpla net\" class=\"wp-image-1440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/notpla-net.jpg?w=270&amp;ssl=1 270w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/notpla-net.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><figcaption>A notpla net<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marathons are a celebration of human achievement, and the recent London marathon was the platform upon which Kenya\u2019s Eliud Kipchoge demonstrated once again why he is the greatest marathoner.
