Blinken joins prominent leaders in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\" target=\"_blank\">human rights community<\/a> coming to the defense of three domestic rights activists who met with Western diplomats for a briefing on Nov. 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Thursday, Egyptian Security Forces arrested Gasser Abdel-Razek, executive director of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) from his home in Maadi, a suburb of Cairo. Egyptian security forces detained two other EIPR employees on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/image007-32.jpg?w=696&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Politics \" class=\"wp-image-137461\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Karim Ennarah, the head of the group&#8217;s criminal justice department, was arrested Wednesday. His whereabouts and the charges he faces are unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The activists were ordered detained for 15 days on charges of joining a terrorist group and spreading fake news, in what critics see as the latest escalation of an unprecedented clampdown on civil society and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/11\/20\/egypt-arrests-leader-of-prominent-human-rights-group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">political dissent<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5506089157017573\" data-ad-slot=\"1517254432\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi\u2019s clampdown on free speech and political dissent was largely ignored by the outgoing administration of Donald Trump. But as a new broom sweeps clean, the Biden administration appears likely to end the impunity enjoyed by authoritarians, dictators, and similar tyrants.
