{"id":1008,"date":"2019-04-16T16:50:16","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T16:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/?p=1008"},"modified":"2019-04-16T16:50:16","modified_gmt":"2019-04-16T16:50:16","slug":"measles-has-claimed-1200-lives-in-madagascar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/measles-has-claimed-1200-lives-in-madagascar\/","title":{"rendered":"Measles has claimed 1,200 lives in Madagascar"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Madagascar\nhas lost more than 1,200 people to what is the largest measles outbreak in its\nhistory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The island\nnation is currently beset by an outbreak with more than 115,000 cases, many of\nthem children according to an earlier report issued by the World Health\nOrganization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was in\nSeptember that the first cases of measles were reported in Madagascar, and the\nnumber of cases has continued rising. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\nepidemic unfortunately continues to expand in size, though at a slower pace\nthan a month ago,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/africa\/measles-outbreak-madagascar-africa-vaccination-health-a8870816.html\">revealed<\/a>\nDr. Dossou Vincent Sodjinou, a WHO epidemiologist currently in Madagascar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According\nto a WHO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/csr\/don\/17-january-2019-measles-madagascar\/en\/\">statement<\/a>\nissued in January, children between 1 to 14 years accounted for 64% of all\ncases in the outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of the\nfactor contributing to the perpetuation of the current outbreak is that malnutrition\naffects nearly half of all children under five in Madagascar (47%). According\nto the WHO, this is the highest proportion of children suffering from malnutrition\nin the African region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally,\nthe rate of immunization remains low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of 2017,\nonly 58% of Madagascans had received a measles immunization, yet a 95% coverage\nis required. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"584\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/OCHA-Infographic.jpg?resize=696%2C584&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1009\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/OCHA-Infographic.jpg?w=777&amp;ssl=1 777w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/OCHA-Infographic.jpg?resize=300%2C252&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/OCHA-Infographic.jpg?resize=768%2C644&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/OCHA-Infographic.jpg?resize=501%2C420&amp;ssl=1 501w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/africaglobalnews.com\/website_b1ce9d46\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/OCHA-Infographic.jpg?resize=696%2C584&amp;ssl=1 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The measles\nvaccinations are being offered freely, but Madagascar is simultaneously\ncontending with other challenges that may make achieving complete coverage\nhard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parts of\nthe country have been affected by flooding, including that caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/africa-in-focus\/2019\/03\/23\/africa-in-the-news-cyclone-idai-47-billion-for-climate-finance-and-power-shortages-in-south-africa\/\">Cyclone\nIdai<\/a>, hampering movement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally,\nthere are regions that are also dealing with an outbreak of plague, which is\nendemic to Madagascar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Madagascar previous\nmajor outbreaks of measles were in 2003 and 2004, where more than 62,000 and\n35,000 people respectively were affected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Africa Global News Production<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Madagascar has lost more than 1,200 people to what is the largest measles outbreak in its history.
